Muddy boots and AI are helping this threatened frog to make a comeback
Briefly

California red-legged frogs, once extirpated from their historic range, were carefully relocated from Baja, Mexico to Southern California over the course of five years. Anny Peralta-Garcia oversaw this monumental effort, which involved multiple stakeholders. After years of waiting for signs of breeding, scientists resorted to Artificial Intelligence to analyze audio recordings for frog calls. This led to a significant finding: mature male frog calls were detected in San Diego County for the first time in 25 years, indicating that reproduction had resumed in the area.
Artificial Intelligence has now been employed to analyze thousands of audio recordings from relocation sites, pinpointing the distinct calls of mature male California red-legged frogs.
This significant breakthrough indicates that 25 years after the California red-legged frog was last heard in San Diego County, reproduction is occurring once more.
