"The funding - $49 million worth - will benefit 35 higher education institutions. Additionally, "Campuses that receive HECap grants are required to invest at least $3 of their own funds for every $1 in state funds received," the statement explained. In total, over $195 million worth of investments spread across the 35 colleges and universities. The statement itemized a short list of some of the funding designations, which includes St. John's University: A former Staten Island institution. The Staten Island campus shuttered in 2024."
New York distributed $49 million through the Higher Education Capital Matching Grant Program (HECap) to 35 independent colleges and universities. Recipient campuses must contribute at least $3 of their own funds for every $1 of state funds, creating total investments exceeding $195 million. Funded projects include renovations, new science buildings, laboratories, athletic facilities and workforce development centers. Specific awards listed include $5 million each for Clarkson University, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, D'Youville and Molloy University, plus grants for Marist University, Russell Sage College and renovations at St. John's University's Staten Island site.
