Portland's Last Lesbian Bar Doc Marie's Closes on Halloween
"Unfortunately, due to ongoing building issues outside of our control, we have to say goodbye to this location."
"With our lease set to expire at the end of October and the landlord requiring higher rent and expenses under a long-term agreement, we were unable to secure an acceptable and sustainable extension that would allow us to continue."
"Thanks to the neighborhood that embraced us, our regulars and our staff through all the years for everything,"
Several longstanding Portland food and drink businesses have closed or announced closures across neighborhoods including Cully, Pearl, Lloyd, Richmond, and Buckman. Nico's Ice Cream closed its original 5713 NE Fremont Street location because of ongoing building issues while its Killingsworth location remains open. Cider Bite permanently closed on October 19 after ten years, citing pandemic shutdowns, rising operating costs, break-ins, and an inability to agree to higher long-term rent. Upright Brewing will close its original 240 N Broadway brewery and cease brewing by year end while its NE Prescott taproom will undergo a minor rebrand and pour other breweries’ beer. The Richmond Bar closed on October 17 after thirteen years with no reason given. Doc Marie’s, a lesbian bar opened in 2022, will close October 31 with owners describing 2025 as devastating for small businesses and the community.
