During a press conference in Johannesburg, activists Boniface Mwangi and Agather Atuhaire recounted their traumatic experiences of sexual assault and torture after being detained in Tanzania. Their visit aimed to monitor the trial of Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who faces treason charges. Mwangi described horrific abuse at the hands of security officials, while Atuhaire similarly suffered. Their experiences have drawn significant attention, prompting concerns from the US Department of State about human rights violations in Tanzania, especially ahead of upcoming elections.
Mwangi described in graphic detail how he was stripped naked, hung upside down from a metal pole and sexually assaulted with a number of objects.
The US Department of State's Bureau of Africa Affairs has expressed concern over the activists' alleged treatment and the implications for human rights in Tanzania.
