Washington Post begins large-scale layoffs
"taking a number of difficult but decisive actions today for our future, in what amounts to a significant restructuring across the company."
"These steps are designed to strengthen our footing and sharpen our focus on delivering the distinctive journalism that sets The Post apart and, most importantly, engages our customers,"
"All departments are impacted,"
"a newsroom cannot be hollowed out without consequences for its credibility, its reach and its future."
The Washington Post began implementing large-scale job cuts and a significant companywide restructuring. The books department will be closed, the sports department is being closed, overseas journalist numbers are being largely cut, and the "Post Reports" podcast will be suspended. Local Washington news and editing staff will be restructured. Executive editor Matt Murray announced the changes in a video meeting and said all departments are impacted. The Washington Post Guild warned that hollowing out the newsroom will harm credibility, reach, and the paper's future, and criticized owner Jeff Bezos for reduced investment in the mission.
