A 12-year-old girl from Luhansk, Kira Skliarova, urgently required a heart transplant after childhood illnesses severely weakened her heart. A 4-year-old donor died of brain injuries from an accident, and the donor’s parents agreed to organ donation. On the night of July 9, Dr. Borys Todurov received a call and led a team to retrieve the donor heart located about ten miles from the Kyiv Heart Institute. The retrieval took place amid one of the heaviest Russian attacks on Kyiv, with missiles, drones, and air-raid alerts as Ukrainian air defenses engaged threats. The team risked their lives to deliver the organ so Kira could receive the transplant.
