Air traffic controller staffing shortages worsened during the fourth week of the government shutdown, producing delays and operational strain across the United States. More than 50 staffing shortages were reported since Friday morning, and at least 264 instances have been recorded since October 1, compared with 60 on the same dates last year. Controllers are required to work as essential employees but are not being paid, prompting increased sick calls and halted or delayed flights at major facilities including Southern California TRACON and Reagan National. Transportation officials report high numbers of staffing triggers, and experts expect conditions to deteriorate as unpaid controllers burn out.
