"On Aug. 7, Trump upped the ante by signing Executive Order 14332, "Improving Oversight of Federal Grantmaking." The order explicitly prohibits funding for initiatives promoting "gender ideology," "racial preferences," or "anti-American values," which is widely thought to ban portrayals of the displacement of Native Americans, the legacy of slavery, and anything else that portrays the history of the country in a negative light."
Federal cultural and humanities grantmaking has faced cancellations, new content-based restrictions, and court battles. Dozens of Oregon grants worth hundreds of thousands of dollars were canceled for allegedly violating new policy priorities, while a federal court issued a preliminary injunction against nationwide terminations to state humanities councils. Executive Order 14332 bars funding for initiatives promoting "gender ideology," "racial preferences," or "anti-American values," language widely interpreted to exclude portrayals of Native American displacement, slavery's legacy, and other critical histories. Congressional cuts eliminated Corporation for Public Broadcasting funding, forcing public radio and television to replace lost support. Nonprofits face unprecedented uncertainty about applying for future federal grants.
