California: officials investigate after second shooting by ICE agents in a week
"The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement that ICE officers were conducting a vehicle stop in Ontario when another driver, who was not the target, approached. Officers ordered the driver to leave the area, according to the statement. As the driver began to pull away, the car stopped and attempted to run officers over by reversing directly at them without stopping, Tricia McLaughlin, the DHS's assistant press secretary, said in a statement."
"Last week, federal agents shot a Los Angeles man who livestreams US immigration enforcement operations on social media. Officials said at the time that Carlitos Ricardo Parias, a TikTok creator with a large following, attempted to ram federal agents' vehicles after agents surrounded him and boxed in his car. Officers shot him in the elbow while a ricochet bullet hit a deputy US marshal in the hand."
"The shootings come as the Trump administration attempts to significantly expand its deportation operations across the US. The government is reportedly moving to overhaul ICE leadership in order increase the pace of removals. Meanwhile, conditions in ICE facilities are troubling. The Guardian reported this week that US immigration officials are increasingly holding people in small and secretive facilities for days and in some cases weeks, a violation of federal policy. At least 16 people died in ICE facilities between January and September."
ICE agents fired defensive shots during a vehicle stop in Ontario after a non-target driver approached and then reversed toward officers, prompting a federal investigation. Officers ordered the driver to leave; as the driver pulled away the car stopped, reversed directly at officers, and the subject fled and abandoned his vehicle after shots were fired. Similar recent incidents include a Los Angeles shooting of TikTok creator Carlitos Ricardo Parias, who officials said attempted to ram federal vehicles; agents shot him in the elbow and a ricochet struck a deputy US marshal's hand. An ICE officer in Phoenix also shot at a vehicle after officials said the driver drove away while the officer was in its path. The events coincide with reported efforts to expand deportation operations and overhaul ICE leadership, and with reporting of troubling detention practices and at least 16 deaths in ICE facilities between January and September.
