Two California Republican state lawmakers proposed a 2026 ballot measure mandating voter identification and proof of citizenship at polls. Voters must present ID, including last four digits of a government-issued ID for mail-in ballots. The initiative aims to streamline identity verification while addressing complaints about outdated voter rolls and inadequate signature reviews, fostering trust in election integrity. Previous attempts to introduce similar measures were unsuccessful, despite research indicating that noncitizen voting and voter fraud are rare occurrences, often unintentional.
We do not want to make it harder to vote. In fact, our initiative makes it easier to vote because it streamlines the process to verify someone's identity.
The measure would help restore trust in elections where they said people have complained about outdated voter rolls and an inadequate signature review process.
