Cape Cod house with Watergate ties falls victim to eroding bluff
""Once the home was acquired by the park, it was initially used as a 'VIP' house for high-ranking government dignitaries who would visit the seashore," said Linzy French, Public Information Officer for theNational Seashore."
""The home achieved notoriety as the 'VIP House' during the early 1970s when the park rented it as a weekend retreat for various government dignitaries," French added. "Most famous among those were members of President Richard Nixon's inner circle, including Nixon's chief domestic advisor, John Ehrlichman, Nixon's chief counselor, Donald Rumsfeld, deputy director of Nixon's 1972 reelection campaign, Jeb Stuart Magruder, and numerous U. S. senators and White House staff. The comings and goings of such figures forever connected the house"
Demolition began Feb. 3 on the Bartlett House at 40 Ocean View Drive in Eastham, threatened by erosion near Coast Guard Beach. The one-story, 1,200-square-foot house was built in 1960 and acquired by the National Park Service in 1964 after the Cape Cod National Seashore was established in 1961. The NPS prohibited new construction and removed unsafe buildings lacking historical significance. The Bartlett House served for decades as seasonal employee housing and later as a short-term rental. The house also served as a VIP weekend retreat in the early 1970s for high-ranking government officials, including members of President Nixon's inner circle.
