Chris Newman is a legal director at the National Day Laborer Organizing Network and has significantly impacted the immigrant rights movement in Southern California. He recently co-counselled a lawsuit that led to a temporary restraining order against immigration raids. Newman also represents a family affected by mistaken deportation. He emphasizes the importance of localized litigation to strengthen democracy and the need for sustained anger as motivation in activism. His activism includes distributing anti-Trump materials to raise awareness.
"If we can litigate the calamity [of Trump] at the local level to the widest degree, that can help democracy survive, dude," Newman said.
"I want to keep the proper amount of anger to have the fuel to do all this," he said. "The pendulum is sweeping so wide and so fast. We need to be ready."
