Deaf, mute and terrified: ICE arrests DACA recipient and ships him to Texas
Briefly

Javier Diaz Santana, who is deaf and mute, experienced a traumatic encounter with ICE agents while working at a car wash. He was alarmed when co-workers fled and, after attempting to escape, encountered masked agents demanding information. Diaz believed showing his Real ID might ensure his safety, as he has legal permission to work granted under DACA and no criminal history. However, his communication difficulties led to confusion, and he was ultimately arrested despite his lawful status.
'I was shocked at what was happening to me,' Diaz said through an American Sign Language interpreter. 'I'm Mexican, I know you can tell I'm Mexican, but I don't know what you're catching me for. I was scared. I felt fear. What does that mean?'
Diaz gestured at his ears, signaling his inability to hear and speak. He thought presenting his Real ID driver's license would keep him safe due to his legal status.
One of the vehicles pulled over, blocking his way. Masked, armed men exited, yelling. Diaz couldn't see a badge, only a vest with 'HSI' - Homeland Security Investigations.
He had been granted permission to work more than a decade ago under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and has no criminal history.
