Cameron John Wagenius, a former US Army soldier, pleaded guilty to conspiring to hack telecom firms' databases and extort at least $1 million. Operating under the nickname 'kiberphant0m', he utilized stolen credentials to access systems while on active duty. Between April 2023 and December 2024, he and others sold stolen data to fund additional scams like SIM swapping. Wagenius searched online for information on defection and ways to evade extradition. His sentencing is set for October 6, with a potential prison term exceeding 20 years.
Wagenius and his accomplices plotted to defraud at least 10 organizations using stolen credentials to access telecom companies' networks, attempting to extort at least $1 million.
They used a tool called SSH Brute among other methods to obtain credentials and extorted victim organizations through private means and cybercrime forums.
