West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey announced the deployment of 300-400 National Guard troops to Washington, DC as part of a crackdown on crime and homelessness led by the Trump administration. Morrisey expressed pride in supporting President Trump’s efforts to enhance the capital’s environment. Other Republican governors, including Henry McMaster of South Carolina, announced additional troop deployments, alongside Ohio Governor Mike DeWine's deployment of 150 military police. Protests emerged against the increased presence of National Guard troops in the capital.
West Virginia is proud to stand with President Trump in his effort to restore pride and beauty to our nation's capital," Morrisey said in a statement. "The deployment... contributes to the collective effort of making our nation's capital a clean and safe environment."
Our National Guard will work to assist President Trump's mission, and should a hurricane or natural disaster threaten our state, they can and will be immediately recalled home to respond," McMaster wrote on X.
None of these military police members are currently serving as law enforcement officers in the state of Ohio," DeWine said in a statement. "Their deployment underscores the cooperative effort among states to support federal initiatives against crime and homelessness.
