In September 2024, a congressional fellowship secured in Washington DC enables work with Bill Foster on science, research policy, and STEM education. The fellowship focuses on defending scientific research and the STEM pipeline, involving collaboration with various congressional offices. The journey into research policy began in 2016, with advocacy for postdoctoral salaries which highlighted that many were below mandated levels. Subsequent roles involved lobbying for increased funding for scientific research and fostering engagement between universities and Congress.
The year-long science and technology policy fellowship at US Congress allows scientists and engineers to contribute to national policymaking, focusing on STEM education and research policy.
Our research into postdoc salaries revealed many fell below US$45,000 a year, leading to increased salaries as a result of advocacy efforts.
