Kennedy Center Ticket Sales Nosedive Under President Trump
"Les Misérables is somehow Trump's favorite musical, so we'll put it in terms he can understand: You wanted to be "Master of the House," but it's time to ask yourself, "Do You Hear the People Sing?" "Depressed ticket sales not only cause a shortfall in revenue; they also bode unfavorably for future fundraising revenue,"
"The vast majority of donors are ticket buyers who are anxious to enhance their relationships with the organization by making contributions in addition to paying for their tickets."
"less than half as much money was spent on tickets in September and the first half of October 2025 as during that same period in 2024. This is less than people spent on the center during any other year since 2018 except 2020, when the venue was locked down for most of the year."
Ticket sales at the Kennedy Center declined sharply under Donald Trump's leadership, with seats sold down 40% and total revenue down 50%. Only 57% of tickets were sold since September, compared with 93% the previous year, leaving 53,000 of 143,000 seats unsold. Leadership changes after the election included appointment of Richard Grenell and the firing of longtime staffers. Christian programming increased and many such events were free. More than 20 shows were canceled, advisory board members resigned, and numerous artists declined invitations. Early fall 2025 ticket spending fell to less than half the prior year's level, threatening future fundraising.
