Mahmoud Khalil, recently detained by ICE, declined to specifically condemn Hamas during an interview, instead emphasizing his condemnation of civilian casualties. He criticized the selective outrage towards Hamas while pointing to the suffering of Palestinians under Israeli actions. Khalil expressed frustration over being labeled a Hamas sympathizer by the Trump administration, asserting his responsibility as a Palestinian to advocate against the war in Palestine. He stated his strong belief in international law and human rights, focusing on the root causes of the ongoing conflict.
I condemn the killing of all civilians, full stop. But it's disingenuous to ask about condemning Hamas while Palestinians are the ones being starved now by Israel.
It is important to ask whether you condemn Hamas because the Trump administration has claimed that you are a Hamas sympathizer.
I simply asked and protested the war in Palestine. That's what I did. That's my duty as a Palestinian, as a human being right now.
I'm a firm believer in international law and human rights, and that’s consistent with who I am.
