Nassau County's top official defended the conditions in the jail housing immigration detainees after Democratic lawmakers inspected its facilities. Republican Bruce Blakeman expressed confidence there is transparency regarding the situation, stating they have "nothing to hide." During their visit, lawmakers Julia Salazar and Michaelle Solages were initially denied entry but later allowed in, reporting that conditions were inadequate, with detainees lacking outdoor time and basic hygiene. Some detainees claimed to have civil immigration offenses without criminal records. Blakeman, however, stated he did not have information on any potential criminal charges as these details are not shared by ICE.
"We welcome their visit, I'm glad they came. Any misunderstandings or rumors could be set aside by showing them what is actually going on here -- and they indicated to my staff that they were very satisfied - we have nothing to hide."
"The conditions the detainees were forced to stay in were less than basic. They are not allowed any outdoor time or even a single shower during their 72-hour stays at the county jail."
