He has raised his national profile through combative messaging that mirrors Trump’s social media tactics, including all-caps posts, memes, and merchandise. Newsom has clashed with Donald Trump over deployment of the California National Guard and Republican redistricting actions, and has led an effort to redraw California’s maps to add five Democratic U.S. House seats via Proposition 50, which is currently being voted on. Newsom labeled Trump an “invasive species” and accused him of damaging alliances, truth, trust, tradition, and institutions. Newsom previously served as mayor of San Francisco and launched a podcast to broaden his national brand.
