Following the shooting of an off-duty Border Patrol agent in Manhattan, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Border Czar Tom Homan announced plans to increase ICE and Border Patrol agents in New York City. The agent, who was shot in the face, is currently limited to communicating through gestures. The shooter, Miguel Mora, entered the U.S. illegally in 2023 and was apprehended by police. Despite a cooperative stance towards the Trump administration, Mayor Adams received criticism from Noem for not doing enough to address the situation.
Noem stated, "What we will do in a city like this is we will double down, we will put more agents here, we will put more personnel here. We will give them more equipment, more training."
Noem criticized Mayor Adams, asserting that he could have done better to prevent the situation, despite Adams maintaining a friendly relationship with the Trump administration.
