Pentagon threatens to cut funding for Scouting America over inclusive policies
"The Department of War warned Scouting America, the organisation formerly known as the Boy Scouts, that they needed to comply with Trump's executive order calling for termination of DEI or risk losing their funding. Chief Pentagon Spokesperson Sean Parnell wrote in a lengthy X post on Monday (2 February) saying: "Scouting America's leadership has made decisions that run counter to the values of this administration and this Department of War, including an embrace of DEl and other social justice, gender-fluid ideological stances.""
"In 2013, Boy Scouts of America began admitting out gay scouts. Two years later, the organisation lifted its ban on adults in leadership positions who are also "open or avowed homosexuals". In 2017, the Boy Scouts announced girls would be accepted as Cub Scouts and later accepted into the flagship Boy Scout program, and began welcoming transgender boys into its boys-only programs."
The Department of War warned Scouting America that the organisation must end diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives or face withdrawal of government funding under an executive order. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said Scouting America's leadership embraced DEI and gender-fluid ideological stances that run counter to administration values and called that unacceptable. The Boy Scouts began admitting openly gay youth in 2013 and lifted a ban on adult leaders who were "open or avowed homosexuals" in 2015. In 2017 the organisation opened Cub Scouts and flagship programs to girls and began welcoming transgender boys into boys-only programs. The Mormon Church severed ties over LGBT-inclusive policies.
