Starbase was incorporated in May 2025 as a city primarily for SpaceX employees and their families. Nearly all of its 500 residents are affiliated with SpaceX. The site's foundation began with SpaceX's 2012 land purchase near Boca Chica Village for rocket manufacturing and testing. The idea of incorporating Starbase was proposed to local officials in 2021, culminating in a near-unanimous vote for incorporation by May 2025. The city will serve as the base for SpaceX's plans to develop a rocket program aimed at reaching Mars.
In the late 2010s, Musk decided that Texas was a friendlier place to do business than California, and by 2020 started moving some company headquarters to the Lone Star State.
Residents in southern Texas voted to incorporate the area around a SpaceX complex as the city of 'Starbase' in May 2025, aimed at supporting a rocket program to reach Mars.
