Tesla goes to trial over fatal autopilot crash
Briefly

Tesla Inc. faces a jury trial for a 2019 crash in Florida where the Autopilot system allegedly failed to detect a parked SUV. Family members of the deceased, Tesla engineers, and safety experts will testify. The lawsuit claims gross negligence by Tesla, seeking damages for wrongful death and injuries. Tesla argues driver error, noting the driver was distracted while engaging the driver-assistance system. The trial follows Tesla's history of settling similar cases confidentially, amid pressure on CEO Elon Musk related to company performance.
"Everyone at Tesla knew that Autopilot couldn't do what Mr. Musk said and it still can't do many of the things he said it could do," attorney Brett Schreiber told jurors in opening arguments, calling the accident a 'preventable' tragedy.
"The lawsuit seeks compensation for medical expenses, wrongful death and pain and suffering, as well as punitive damages for what a lawyer for the plaintiffs described as grossly negligent and intentional conduct by Tesla."
