The Education Department issued a rule to deny Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) eligibility to employees of organizations the administration deems unlawful or objectionable, including many LGBTQ+ and transgender-supporting groups. The rule will cut off access to PSLF for numerous government and nonprofit workers who serve communities and initiatives the administration disfavors. Under Secretary Nicholas Kent framed targeted organizations as violating laws by "harboring illegal immigrants" or performing what the administration calls prohibited medical procedures on minors. The rule follows an executive order narrowing the definition of public service and is likely to remove loan relief from many public servants.
