Trump says Xi assured him China won't take action on Taiwan
"You'll find out if it happens, and he understands the answer to that,"
"I can't give away my secrets. The other side knows."
"we would never do anything while President Trump is president,"
President Trump said Xi Jinping assured him Beijing would not attempt to unify Taiwan with mainland China while Trump remains in office. Trump said Taiwan was not raised during their meeting in South Korea, which focused on US-China trade tensions. Asked whether he would order US forces to act if China moved on Taiwan, Trump declined to specify a response and said, "You'll find out if it happens." The United States maintains a policy of strategic ambiguity toward Taiwan and the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act commits the US to help Taiwan defend itself. A Chinese embassy spokesman did not respond.
