The US Agency for International Development (USAID) has been ended by President Donald Trump, focusing on eliminating so-called wasteful government spending. Founded in 1961, USAID aimed to reduce extreme poverty and promote resilient societies worldwide. The Trump administration claims there is little value in the agency's work over six decades. Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered the absorption of USAID's remaining programs into the State Department and criticized the agency's effectiveness since the Cold War. The agency's staff has significantly dwindled amidst this restructuring.
"Beyond creating a globe-spanning NGO industrial complex at taxpayer expense, USAID has little to show since the end of the Cold War," Rubio said in a social media post on Tuesday.
"That ends today," Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a social media posting Tuesday. American taxpayers would no longer "pay taxes to fund failed governments in faraway lands," Rubio vowed.
