GTA 6 Company Reveals Which One Of Its Franchises Lost "A Great Deal Of Money"
"“We had a tough history with MLB,” Zelnick said. “It's no secret there [that] we lost a great deal of money with them. And I don't like losing money.”"
"In an interview with Game File, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said the company is unlikely to get back into MLB-licensed baseball video games because it's “too small a market” and Take-Two wants to place bets on games that are more likely to make money."
"So what happened? Zelnick said, “What we hoped would come to fruition creatively did not.” Zelnick said he would be open-minded to working with the NFL again “if an opportunity presents itself.”"
"The series did not go out on a strong note. MLB 2K13 was critically panned for being essentially the same game as its predecessor, featuring only roster updates."
Take-Two publishes major franchises including GTA, NBA 2K, Civilization, Borderlands, and BioShock, but not every licensed sports venture succeeds. The company is unlikely to return to MLB-licensed baseball video games because the market is too small and because it previously lost significant money with MLB. The MLB 2K series ran from 2005 for about a decade and ended after MLB 2K13 received criticism for being largely the same as the prior entry with roster updates. Take-Two continues successful sports franchises such as NBA 2K, PGA Tour 2K, WWE 2K, and the returning TopSpin 2K in 2024. Take-Two also reached an NFL deal for non-simulation football games, releasing NFL 2K Playmakers in 2024, with limited follow-through.
