In 2025, Bethesda Game Studios announced the remaster of their iconic RPG, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, now available on all platforms. The announcement, confirmed through a livestream featuring gameplay footage and developer insights, reveals that the project was a collaboration with the external developer, Virtuos, rather than Bethesdaâs direct team. While it utilizes Unreal Engine for enhanced graphics and audio, it remains a remaster utilizing the original Creation Engine. Oblivion is celebrated for its deep character customization and an open-world gameplay style that paved the way for the beloved Skyrim.
Oblivion was the immediate precursor to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which became one of the most popular games of all timeâbut Oblivion was pretty popular in its time, too.
The port was not handled directly by the original developer, Bethesda Game Studios. Rather, people within BGS worked closely with an outside developer, Virtuos.
It's important to note that this is a remaster, not a remake. This project uses Unreal Engine, but only for the presentation aspects like graphics and audio.
Like Skyrim, it straddles the line between story-based fantasy RPG and systems-based, emergent gameplay playground. It's less structured and accessible than Skyrim, but offers far more robust character customization.
