Negotiations between D.C. and the Commanders regarding a stadium deal are making significant progress, with a vote anticipated on August 1. Two public hearings have been scheduled to gather testimony. Councilmember Mendelson expressed confidence in the negotiations, indicating an interest in improving financial terms and ensuring the timeline for mixed-use development is met. Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie also conveyed optimism about the deal's approval before the Commanders' season opener on September 7, stating that a majority of the council supports moving forward with the deal.
Mendelson said in the radio interview on Tuesday that D.C. and the Commanders "were very far down the road" in negotiations. He emphasized that improving financial terms, particularly regarding tax revenues from the site, would be beneficial. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of having assurances that the mixed-use development promises will be fulfilled within the suggested timelines.
We are nearing the goal line. We're in the red zone," at-large councilmember Kenyan McDuffie stated, expressing optimism for a vote and approval of the deal before the Commanders' season opener on Sept. 7.
Mendelson stated a majority of the current 12-member council "want to get to yes" on the stadium deal, dismissing claims from non-council members that the council aims to disrupt this deal.
NBC4 in Washington first reported the significant progress toward a deal Wednesday morning.
