A man accused of attacking the White House Correspondents' Association dinner is asking to remove top Justice Department officials from direct involvement in his prosecution. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro were attending the April 25 event when Cole Tomas Allen allegedly ran through a security checkpoint and fired a shotgun at a Secret Service officer. Defense attorneys argue that their presence as potential victims or witnesses creates at least the appearance of a conflict of interest if they make prosecutorial decisions. They suggest a special prosecutor may be warranted and ask the assigned district judge to disqualify Pirro, Blanche, and possibly other officials. Pirro says her office will respond through a separate filing and vows full prosecution of political violence.
