Vintage baby names are names that were once popular but fell out of fashion. They are now being reintroduced as parents seek names that feel both fresh and distinctive. These names, while familiar, tend to be less common among newer generations, making them appealing. Additionally, vintage names often carry emotional significance, may honor relatives, or draw inspiration from literature, such as 'Scarlett' from 'Gone With The Wind.' Many vintage names can also convert into cute nicknames, enhancing their attractiveness for modern parents.
"Vintage baby names are names that were in style amongst past generations and then fell out of style at some point," Colleen Slagen explains.
"The appeal to parents is that these names now feel 'fresh' again," Slagen notes. "They weren't names they heard amongst peers or peers' parents growing up."
"Vintage names may also evoke a sense of nostalgia, honor a relative, or be inspired by a literary reference like Scarlett from 'Gone With The Wind.'"
Many vintage names have built-in options for formal legal names and cute nicknames, like 'Dorothy,' which can be shortened to Dot, Dottie, Thea or Dee Dee.
