The traditional tampon design has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years despite user dissatisfaction. Athletes Amanda Calabrese and Greta Meyer identified the reliability issues with standard period products. In 2019, they created Sequel, the first spiral tampon specifically designed for users' needs. Calabrese's experiences in high-level competitions highlighted the inadequacies of existing products, as did Meyer’s frustrations during her time in lacrosse. Their goal was not financial gain but rather to develop a solution that addressed real-world problems faced by users.
"Period products are unreliable in critical moments," says athlete and entrepreneur Amanda Calabrese. "For athletes, that could be sporting moments, but for a mom, it could be dropping your kids off at school, or running through the airport."
The idea for Sequel wasn't born out of a desire to make money - it was about solving a real problem. Calabrese and Meyer met at Stanford, where they both majored in mechanical engineering.
