WNBA All-Stars wore shirts reading "Pay us what you owe us" during the All-Star Game to advocate for fair compensation and changes to revenue-sharing. Star player Napheesa Collier highlighted the discrepancy in earnings compared to what players contribute to the league. Negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement have faltered, prompting players to consider a potential walkout if demands are unmet by October. Solidarity from fans during the game showcased widespread support for players seeking better pay and benefits, with union leadership recognizing the opportunity to raise awareness for their cause.
We get a very tiny percentage of all the money that's made through the WNBA, which obviously is made through the entertainment we provide, said Lynx star Napheesa Collier on the decision to wear the shirts.
If a new CBA is not reached by October some players, including All-Stars Collier and Angel Reese, have mentioned the potential of a walkout.
We had no idea that they were in solidarity with our demonstration, said former Stanford star Nneka Ogwumike, president of the WNBPA and Seattle Storm forward.
This is a perfect opportunity to raise awareness for what we're doing and do it together, Collier said.
