Attention, foreigners: Your visa will cost double in 2026
"The proposed increase seeks to guarantee a fair and proportional contribution, based on the intensive use of infrastructure and specialized human resources,"
"In Mexico, the arrival of a foreign population has brought on changes and affected sectors such as housing, gastronomy, local commerce and recreational and collaborative spaces,"
"While boosting consumption and productive activity, [this] requires the design of equitable, safe, orderly and correct migration public policies."
"dedicated a very long discussion to the operational aspect of these types of [economic] contributions,"
Mexico will double the fees for temporary and permanent residency permits in 2026 as proposed in the 2026 federal budget submitted to Congress on Sept. 8. One-year temporary permits rise from 5,328 pesos to 10,656 pesos; multi-year temporary permits increase substantially, and permanent residency rises from 6,494 pesos to 12,988 pesos. The proposal cites intensive use of infrastructure and specialized human resources as justification. The Finance and Public Credit Ministry links foreign arrivals to changes in housing, gastronomy, local commerce and recreational spaces and calls for equitable, safe, orderly and correct migration public policies. The change requires congressional approval to take effect.
