"We're going to be contributing to the climate issue, but unfortunately we may not benefit as we should,"
"Many African countries have fragile governments, and that makes the respect of environmental principles by mining companies across Africa a major challenge,"
"The negative environmental impacts from extraction include water pollution."
"The revenues generated by the exploitation of strategic minerals are not necessarily shared equitably between the state and local communities,"
Critical minerals are essential to everyday technologies and are increasingly demanded for low-pollution transport and renewable energy. Africa supplies most of the world’s cobalt, platinum, tantalum and manganese, and critical-mineral development could raise sub-Saharan Africa’s GDP by about 12% over 25 years if the energy transition is managed properly. Rapid extraction has reshaped cities and intensified cross-border conflicts. Expanding mining operations have forced community relocations, caused water pollution, and strained fragile governance. Revenues from strategic minerals are often not shared equitably between states and local communities, limiting local benefits.
