Wafae El-Arar, 26; Kaoutar Naqqad, 23; and Imane Mallah, 24 were found at the Royal Kahal Beach Resort in San Pedro on Feb. 22, 2025. Belizean forensic officials determined acute pulmonary edema and later identified carbon monoxide poisoning as the underlying cause, with toxicology showing no illicit drugs. Belize Police Commissioner Chester Williams indicated a malfunctioning gas-powered water heater as a possible source. Families filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit in Boston alleging a catastrophic failure of hotel safety systems, ignored guest warnings of carbon monoxide exposure, and the absence of a functional carbon monoxide detector in the suite.
