"get updates beyond the media and hearing from them what they were experiencing."
Category 5 Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica with sustained winds up to 185 mph, producing life-threatening storm surge and widespread flooding. The storm ranks among the most powerful ever recorded in the Atlantic and later moved toward the Bahamas and Bermuda. Jamaica experienced extensive destruction and more than 50 deaths across Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic as access to remote areas remains limited. Kimisha Simpson, founder and CEO of Ignite Jamaica Fund, is confident that Jamaica's national motto will rally the diaspora and others to support rebuilding efforts. Simpson has been contacting friends and family in Manchester for updates beyond media reports and to learn about local experiences.
