Jamie Melham won the Melbourne Cup aboard Half Yours on a wet track before about 80,000 spectators. The five-year-old gelding, the only Australian-bred horse in the field, finished two lengths ahead of Goodie Two Shoes with Middle Earth third. Half Yours, trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, surged to the lead with 200m to go. Melham completed the Caulfield–Melbourne Cups double after winning the Caulfield Cup last month. The year included a wedding and the recent death of her grandfather, who had watched the Caulfield Cup. Michelle Payne won the Cup ten years earlier and praised Melham's athleticism and bond with horses.
