Australia and Papua New Guinea will sign a defence treaty committing to mutual defence against armed attacks within the Pacific. The treaty enables citizens of both nations to serve in each other's militaries and allows Papua New Guinea nationals a pathway to Australian citizenship by joining Australia's military. The pact is framed as a move to counter China's rising influence in the Pacific and will be signed in Port Moresby by Prime Ministers Anthony Albanese and James Marape.
