Pope Leo XIV turned 70 and greeted well-wishers at the Vatican after the traditional Angelus prayer. He thanked the Lord, his parents and those who remembered him in prayer and presided over an ecumenical service honoring 21st-century martyrs. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni sent birthday wishes, calling his teachings a solid guide in extremely complex times. Born Robert Prevost in Chicago, he is the first American pope and was the youngest pope since 1978 when elected last May. He spent two decades in Peru and acknowledged a huge learning curve as he adapts to global leadership.
