Tanzania president to be sworn in after disputed election DW 11/03/2025
"Samia Suluhu Hassan was set to be sworn in as Tanzania's president on Monday while internet services in the country were blocked amid post-election protests, which the opposition says left hundreds killed. State television said the inauguration would be held in the State House where the public would not attend the event, instead of the usual venue, a stadium. The country's electoral commission has announced Hassan as the winner of the election with 98% of the votes."
"The French AFP news agency cited a diplomatic source as saying there were credible reports of hundreds of deaths registered at hospitals and clinics across the country. The diplomatic source went on to say there were "concerning reports" that the local police was using the blackout to hunt down opposition leaders and activists who may have video evidence of last week's alleged killings."
Samia Suluhu Hassan was to be sworn in as Tanzania's president with the inauguration moved to the State House and closed to the public. The electoral commission announced Hassan the winner with 98% of the vote while the main opposition, Chadema, called the vote a sham and had been barred from participation. Nationwide internet blackout and curfew were imposed since voting day, and schools, universities and public transport remained closed. Opposition figures allege hundreds killed by security forces and cite up to 800 deaths. Diplomatic sources reported credible accounts of deaths and fears police used the blackout to target opposition leaders and activists. Chadema urged UN and ICC investigations.
