President Trump will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in Korea during an Asia trip that included Malaysia and Japan, with the meeting timed around the APEC summit. The meeting will be the first face-to-face encounter between Trump and Xi in six years. Agenda items include Russia's war in Ukraine, possible discussion of Taiwan, and most prominently the escalating U.S.-China trade war. Trump projects optimism about achieving a breakthrough and a mutually beneficial trade deal. Analysts expect limited progress on de-escalation but anticipate airing grievances, tactical shifts to reassure markets, and discussions of China’s recent rare-earth export restrictions.
