Turkiye unveils its first intercontinental ballistic missile: What we know
"In this era where economic cost has become an asymmetric weapon, Turkiye offers its allies not only weapon systems but also technology and a sustainable security economy. (Defence Minister Yasar Guler)"
"In my view, Turkiye does not need ICBMs to deter any immediate security threat it is facing. Therefore, it is not the ICBM, but the capability to produce it that is significant for Turkiye. (Ozgur Unluhisarcikli, German Marshall Fund)"
Turkey unveiled the Yildirimhan intercontinental ballistic missile prototype at the SAHA 2026 Defence and Aerospace Exhibition in Istanbul. The missile has a 6,000km range, maximum speed of Mach 25, and 3,000kg payload capacity, enabling it to strike targets across Europe, Africa, and Asia from Turkish territory. The ICBM features four rocket propulsion engines fueled by liquid nitrogen tetroxide. Turkey has not yet begun production. Defence Minister Yasar Guler emphasized Turkey's commitment to providing allies with weapon systems, technology, and sustainable security solutions. Experts highlight that the capability to produce ICBMs is more significant than the missiles themselves for Turkey's strategic positioning and defense industry development.
