Almost 65,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed since Israel's offensive began after Hamas' Oct. 7 attack, according to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry. Over the last week Israeli forces intensified airstrikes in Gaza City and flattened dozens of high-rise buildings said to be used by Hamas. The Israel Defense Forces have ordered roughly one million Gaza City residents to move south to "humanitarian areas," and report about 300,000 have left so far. Massive airstrikes were followed by tanks entering the city according to Palestinian press reports. Senior Israeli security chiefs warned the operation could endanger hostages, produce heavy IDF casualties, fail to dismantle Hamas, and force direct Israeli rule over Gaza's two million residents. The offensive occurred hours after Marco Rubio met with Prime Minister Netanyahu, with Rubio characterizing Hamas as dedicated to violence and noting responses may not be solely diplomatic.
