Barnet Council has approved the outline planning application for the redevelopment of Edgware town centre, a collaboration between Ballymore and TfL. The project includes demolishing the shopping centre to create a podium for 3,365 new homes, with 1,150 designated as affordable and additional accommodations for students. Nearly five acres of previously restricted land will be transformed into Deans Brook Nature Park. Controversy surrounds the size of the project and plans to relocate the bus garage underground, facing concerns about fire safety. Further council involvement is required for detailed design approval.
The development at Edgware, a joint venture between Ballymore and TfL, involves demolishing the existing shopping centre to construct a podium for 3,365 new homes, including 1,150 affordable homes and 463 student accommodation spaces.
The redevelopment will also open nearly five acres of land, previously inaccessible to the public for almost a century, as the new Deans Brook Nature Park.
Concerns raised about the plans include the size of the development and the proposed relocation of the bus garage into a basement, particularly regarding fire risks associated with all-electric buses.
Outline planning approval has been granted to allow detailed planning to commence while still requiring further council involvement in the secondary approval of detailed designs.
