The Republican president's Thursday night post was deleted on Friday and blamed on a staff member after a widespread backlash, including from civil rights leaders and veteran Republican senators, for its treatment of the nation's first black president and first lady. The deletion, a rare admission of a misstep by the White House, came hours after press secretary Karoline Leavitt said there was nothing offensive about the post.
We all saw what happened on Jan. 6, 2021. Donald Trump urged his followers to prevent the lawful transfer of presidential power, even though he lost the 2020 election by 7 million votes. He was immediately impeached for this. A majority (57 percent) of the U.S. Senate, including seven Republicans, voted to convict Trump and banish him from office forever.

Honey is a protege of Cleta Mitchell, a lawyer who tried to help Trump overturn the 2020 election results. In 2024, ProPublica reported that Honey had played a key role in Mitchell's behind-the-scenes effort to change Georgia's election rules to allow Republican officials to contest a potential Trump loss in that year's presidential race. Honey also promoted election conspiracy theories, including one Trump cited in a speech to his followers before they stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
