Lionel Messi has won the MLS 2025 golden boot by a distance after another spectacular season for Inter Miami. Eight-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi finished the regular season with a hat-trick in a 5-2 win at Nashville as Miami finished third in the Eastern Conference. The treble meant Messi ended five goals ahead of his nearest rivals, while no player eclipsed the Argentina icon's haul of assists.
The former Three Lions captain played in the 1998, 2002 and 2006 editions of the tournament, experiencing some memorable highs and crushing lows. Who can forget Beckham's red card for kicking out at Argentina's Diego Simeone at France 98 - or his cathartic, match-winning penalty against the same opponents in Japan and Korea four years later?
"Thrilled to finally share this with you - this December, Miami will host a very special youth football tournament featuring some of the top clubs from around the world. "The future of the game will be on full display, and it's more than just matches - we've got an incredible few days planned with lots of other exciting activities. This is about the next generation. Hope you like it! This is the #MessiCup."
Inter Miami CF are in advanced talks with defender Sergio Reguilón for a possible contract ahead of the 2026 MLS season, sources told ESPN on Tuesday. The left back would come in to replace Jordi Alba, who announced his retirement from football at the end of the year after two years with Inter Miami. Though Alba initially signed a contract extension with Inter Miami through the 2027 season, he decided to rescind the deal and retire instead.
Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni on Friday named Inter Miami's Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul to his 28-player squad for the friendlies this month against Venezuela and Puerto Rico in Miami and Chicago, respectively. The participation of Messi and De Paul in the match against Venezuela on Oct. 10 remains in doubt as Inter Miami plays Atlanta United in a key MLS regular-season match at Chase Stadium one day later.
They sit fourth in the Eastern Conference standings but have played two games fewer than all the teams around them, and a pair of victories in their matches in hand would take them within one point of the conference and Supporters' Shield leaders, the Philadelphia Union. Owing to their participation at the Club World Cup and their runners-up finish in the Leagues Cup, Miami have had several games rescheduled and face a packed schedule before the MLS Cup playoffs.
Clearly, we would have liked to have been a little more consistent at times, but we go back to the same thing. Playing as much as we have, finding consistency is often difficult, due to fatigue, burnout, and a host of situations. As far as our conference is concerned, I see everything as very even,
Marking their return from September's international break with a stellar 3-1 romp away at Chicago, Pascal Jansen's men have come skyrocketing up the Eastern Conference standings. Last seen at the Yankee Stadium clinching an action-packed 3-2 victory against Columbus, the former AZ Alkmaar boss should find the mood in his camp at a red-hot high. In fact, since returning from September's fortnight interval, New York have won all of their previous three consecutive MLS showdowns by an aggregate score of 8-3.
