We're in that part of the year where smartphone makers duke it out for the proverbial heavyweight belt. In the United States, Apple's iPhone tends to be the undisputed champ year after year. The challengersalmost exclusively Google and Samsungare young and hungry's preferred by some tech editors, but ultimately fall short on cultural impact or widespread appeal. The fact that there is an entire subsection of internet jokes focusing on "green text bubbles" proves that more than any real stat could.

The usual chip and connectivity updates are here courtesy of the Apple A19 Pro SoC, the base memory has been upped to 256 GB for the rest of the lineup, while the Pro Max which was already there last year gains a new 2 TB storage option. The battery life got better, the charging got faster, and iOS got more features.

The latest smartphone from Apple hit stores this weekend and reportedly the bell of the ball is the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Customers want it for its advanced telephoto lens, large display and battery life. Investors want it to keep up with the Joneses. While Apple remains one of the globe's most valuable tech companies, there is growing concern on Wall Street that the industry leader is lagging behind some of its rivals when it comes to artificial intelligence. Ideally the new model addresses some of that chatter.

The company introduced its first stainless steel phone, the iPhone 4, way back in 2010, but switched to aluminum with the iPhone 5. These past couple of years, Cupertino experimented with titanium to try and fight the steadily increasing weight of the Pro and especially Pro Max models. The experiments are over and this year Apple is using aluminum for all models but the Air.
