More than 4,500 young people have been vaccinated and over 10,000 treated with antibiotics in a huge drive to tackle a deadly meningitis outbreak in Kent, as health officials say it is too early to say if it has reached its peak.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has now confirmed one case of meningococcal disease for a CCCU student. We have reached out to support the individual directly, and student wellbeing and support are reaching out and making themselves available to support fellow students more widely. We have followed UKHSA advice and informed the limited number of close contacts of the individual that they should receive precautionary antibiotics.

The meningitis outbreak in our area is a huge shock. Feeling so deeply sad for the young lives lost a year 13 pupil at QEGS [Queen Elizabeth's grammar school] and a uni of Kent student. My heart goes out to their families. It's incredibly worrying too for the families of the young people in hospital, and others at risk.
